Handball is the second most popular team sport in Germany after soccer. At the same time, the sport is becoming increasingly professionalized. This makes it all the more important for teams to stand out from the competition. To meet this challenge, video analysis systems - such as those successfully introduced at the BallsportArena Dresden in 2017 - can provide support. These are used, among other things, both during handball training and at competitions with the aim of increasing training success.
BallsportArena Dresden - Impressing multifunctionality
In April 2017, the BallsportArena Dresden was inaugurated. It has 3000 seats and offers the handball club HC Elbflorenz optimal conditions for training, competition, youth development and performance promotion.
From the very beginning, the goal of the arena was to establish professional handball in Dresden. But the multifunctional BallsportArena can also be used for other types of sports and events: The playing field is suitable for all ball sports as well as for concerts, trade fairs or dance events. The multifunctionality also meets the high demands of athletes, guests, organizers and entrepreneurs.
Special feature - LEDs processed into the glass bottom
The special feature are the LEDs built into the glass floor, which can be faded in as game lines in each case in adaptation to the respective sport. This technology comes from the manufacturer ASB GlassFloor.
But the arena can also convince with its diverse conference technology (video walls, beamers, TV monitors, etc.).
The whole area is also used for parent-child sports and school sports. For example, there is also an exercise pool in the arena (e.g. for rehabilitation measures).
Optimal support with the latest standards
In consultation with coaches and sports scientists, it was quickly decided that an innovative video analysis system should be should be implemented in the BallsportArena Dresden. The focus was on feedback from the coach, which was to be individual and quick based on the recorded video. Further requirements followed: Cameras should provide an overview of the entire playing field and at the same time be protected from flying balls.
The arena was to be equipped with a video analysis system that would provide optimum support for handball, while at the same time being forward-looking and meeting the latest standards.
State-of-the-art technology, tailored to customer requirements
To implement the video analysis system, the client first formulated the requirements. This resulted in a requirements profile as the basis for a project outline. This in turn formed the basis for the quotation.
After the parties finally approved the bid, planning began, deadlines were set, and responsibilities were determined.
We further developed the already existing video analysis software. For example, a special tagging mask was developed for post-recording evaluation - optimally tailored to handball training: The trainer can tag important game scenes within a few seconds and thus give direct feedback on moves. An evaluation is therefore already carried out during the game.
When designing the system, the focus was always on customer requirements. For example, seven PTZ cameras with integrated pan and zoom functions were installed. The trainer can thus view the player from several perspectives.
Utilius kiwano - Multi-camera system with numerous advantages
The video analysis system utilius kiwano was set up in the BallsportArena with the aim of providing the club with optimal support during training as well as at various competitions. A big advantage of the video analysis system here - as already mentioned - is the direct video feedback during these disciplines.
This allows the coach to monitor important scenes during the game. He can then analyze them together with his athletes during the halftime break. This makes both training and competitions more successful.
The system can be used universally - also for any other sports like basketball or volleyball. This is a great advantage for the BallsportArena in particular, as it is designed for a wide range of sports, as described above.
...and there are more advantages
The use of a video analysis system also results in further advantages:
- The user interface of utilius kiwano is easy and intuitive to use, i.e. after a short introduction anyone can already operate it.
- Even if the trainer wants to use the system spontaneously - for example during training: It is flexibly available and ready for use at any time.
- The objective feedback on the image allows the trainer within the team to discuss what has been recorded with his team in a timely manner, thus enabling direct control of the training success. He can thus recognize problems better and correct mistakes more easily.
- Coaches can re-watch live plays without having to stop or rewind the actual recording by using the Time Shift function.
- The video analysis system can be individually assembled as desired (selection from various functions) and is adapted to the individual needs and requirements of the client.
In summary, the various functions of video analysis that are made possible with the help of the multi-camera system - e.g. in handball training - should now be mentioned again:
- Recording and playback
- Time shift function
- Single frame navigation through the video
- Slow motion function
- Meta data mapping
- Crossfade recordings
- Creating playlists
- Cutting out multiple clips from one shot
- Pausing a recording in progress
- Archiving function
The multi-camera system was ideally adapted to the needs of the athletes and their coaches in the BallsportArena and is a great help for motion analysis in handball training and competition. And should the requirements for the system change in the future, this will not be a problem: Because the system makes it possible to add more cameras in the future.
