General FAQs
Currently we only support Windows operating systems for all our software products. You need at least Windows 7.
There are two ways to use the software on an Apple Mac hardware:
- Installation of Boot Camp:
This program is included on all Intel Macs with at least Mac OS X Leopard 10.5. Boot Camp simply installs a Windows parallel to Mac OS X. Each time you boot, you'll have to decide whether to boot Windows or Mac OS X. You still need an original Windows CD (XP or Vista) with license. With version 3.1 of Apple's Boot Camp you can also install Windows 7 on (most) Macs with Intel processor.
- Install virtualization software such as Parallels Desktop for Mac or Vmware Fusion:
Here you boot only Mac OS X and Windows runs in a separate window. You also need an additional Windows license for this.
http://www.parallels.com/de/products/desktop/
http://www.vmware.com/de/products/fusion/
Attention: There is no Firewire interface available here! This makes live analysis with DV camcorders impossible.
- Our software is paid once and is licensed for life. Only exception: our season license of utilius vs. Here we offer the possibility to buy the software for one season (duration 1 year).
- Shipping costs will not be charged to you, as we only activate your licenses online. Only the purchase of a dongle will incur shipping costs. You can find more information in our AGB.

The license of the software must be activated once. More information can be found in a separate document.
First, you create an individual graphical template with buttons and text for the scene annotations. The Tagging tab contains the commands for this. Select the New icon and enter a name for the layout. In the Matrix row, select the number of rows and columns, each element representing a button for later scene capture (tagging). A 2 x 2 layout consists of 4 buttons. Then click with the mouse on the symbol in the middle of the button and enter any text (max. 50 characters) for the scene annotation. Label the other buttons analogously. Change the color using the Color command in the menu band. Finally, enter the name of the group (for example Team 1 or Attack) and save the result. With the plus [+] you can create further groups with buttons. Note, however, that the texts must not appear twice.
The next step is to adjust the settings for scene capture. This will affect the length of a scene, among other things. Select the Scenes tab, then click the small arrow below the Start/Stop button, and then click Edit Settings. Select the following settings: In the upper part of the window you set "Start and Stop simultaneously" and in the lower part you set the two checkmarks in front of "Start with lead time" and "Stop with lead time". For the lead time, for example, select 3 seconds and for the lead time 2 seconds. The scene then lasts exactly 5 seconds, starting 3 seconds before the mouse click and ending 2 seconds afterwards. Accept the settings with OK.
Now switch back to the Tagging tab. Use the View command to open the saved layout. You can place the new window anywhere on the screen. When playing the video, click on the button in the Actions window if a scene with the corresponding characteristics appears. A scene entry is then automatically created with the specified pre- and post-run time and the annotation that appears as text on the button.
The Statistics tab in the Actions window displays a graph showing the frequency of captured scenes of the same annotation. With a mouse click on the arrow next to the graphic bar you can play the corresponding video sequences in a 2nd window. With the checkmarks in front of the annotations you can select several different scene annotations.
With the Export command from the program menu, you can now easily output the selected scenes to a new video file.

utilius vs utilius vs stores video data and the database with the recording, analysis and editing data in different locations. This ensures the highest possible flexibility in the use of storage space. Despite all caution when working with the data, errors or data loss can occur due to faulty hardware and software or virus infestation. In the worst case, all analysis data and thus many hours of work are irretrievably lost. For this reason, you should back up the utilius vs database at fixed intervals, because all recording, analysis and cutting data as well as your category systems are stored in this file. How often you should make a backup depends on how intensively you work with your system. One backup per week is sufficient for normal system use. However, if you are doing daily analysis or have just completed a large project, it is recommended that you back up immediately after completing your work with utilius vs. So sichern Sie Ihre Daten:
utilius vs-Datenbank
Zur Sicherung der Datenbank nutzen Sie den Windows-Explorer. Der Standardpfad für die Datenbank ist unter MS Windows XP:
„C:\Programme\utilius VS\utiliusVS.mdb“.
utilius vs-video data
There is no fixed location for the video data. This is freely selectable by the user.
You do not have to back up the usually quite extensive video data regularly. A backup on DV tape, CD or DVD is sufficient.
Before you install an update of utilius vs , we also recommend a backup of the database, since changes to the program usually also affect the database. When utilius vs is started for the first time after an update, a backup copy of the "old" database is created in the same folder and the database is then updated to the new version. If, in addition to the file "utiliusVS.mdb", you also find files named "utiliusVS_vXX" in your database folder (XX stands for a version number of the database), this is such a backup copy. With the exception of the file with the highest version number "XX", you can delete all old backup copies.
utilius® vs stores category systems, recording, analysis and cutting data in a database. If you want to exchange a category system or the data of an analysis with a colleague, you can also use the export/import function of utilius® vs . The data is exported from one database to an export file with the extension "xdv". This is a structured text file in XML format which contains all descriptive information about the exported data.
The detailed description of the export/import functionality can be downloaded here .
Further information can also be found in the utilius® vsonline help, Index: "Export and Import".
Recordings
If you want to change the destination of new recording files for an existing recording, open this recording and choose the button. . In the Document Properties Recording dialog box, select the new directory.
If you want to change the directory for all new recordings, select the Administration/Options command. In the recording options, select the base directory for new recording files.
You can delete the video files from older recordings without losing the recordings and all analyses and cuts. utilius® vscan automatically restore the video files later when the corresponding video tapes from which the files were recorded are available.
You can also extract certain scenes to a cut list before deleting them and save them in a separate cut file so that you can continue to view them.
The procedures are described in the Deleting Recordings section of your online help.
Analysis
Select Administration - Category System from the menu and click the New button. Assign a meaningful name for the new category system by overwriting the suggested name "New category system" (e.g. game observation, training) Save the change.
In the next step you create the categories. First change the selection in the list box from "Category System" to "Category" and select New again. . Enter a name for the new category (e.g. team, athlete, player...) and an abbreviation (max. 8 characters) that can be derived from the name. Save the change. Create further categories in the same way. A category system can contain any number of categories.
Finally, you define the characteristics of the individual categories. Select the category in the "Category tree", then change the selection in the list box from "Category" to "Characteristic" and choose New. Enter a name for the characteristic (e.g. team: Germany) and an abbreviation (max. 8 characters, e.g. GER). You can also assign a key combination to the characteristic. To do this, select the "Key" button and then enter the desired key or key combination (e.g. "A" for attack). Please note that some keys are already reserved for program functions (see Menu - Help - Key Assignment). Save the change Create further features in the same way. A category can contain any number of features.
When all categories have been created, exit the window with OK. The category system can now be used in a video analysis. A later extension is possible at any time.
NOTE: Statistical analysis is based on the categories of your video analysis by displaying them in tabular or graphical form. If you want to use the evaluation function, you have to design the categories in such a way that they can later be compared in the table in rows and columns.
Use the flexibility of utilius® vs for the analysis of your competitions or your training.
When creating a new analysis, you can select a category system from the New Analysis dialog box.
You can change the category system for an analysis at any time. To do this, select a new category system in the document properties of the analysis. You can display the document properties from the video view using the button or from the Open Document dialog box using the Properties command.
If you want to extend a category system or create a new one, select the Administration/Category System command.
Open the analysis and press the button. In the Edit Category Layout dialog box, you can select an existing category layout or change a new layout. To do this, select a background graphic and add characteristics (double-click on the lower left list).
You can move the characteristic symbols with the mouse. By double-clicking on a characteristic, you can edit the properties: change the text or assign a graphic symbol.
For more information, see the Edit Category Layout section of your online help.
If a category layout already appears in an analysis, use the Edit/Category Layout command to edit it. To move the characteristic symbols on the background graphic, simply press the ALT key and position the symbol with the mouse.
See also the Capturing Scenes section of your online help.
In the video view, right-click the analysis scene. Select Goto from the context menu. The start time of the scene is displayed in the video.
Now you can drag the slider to a new position. Then press the Scene Start or Scene Stop button. The current video position is then assigned to the scene as the start or stop time.
For more information, see the Capturing Scenes section of your online help.
Yes, with the help of the command "Export cutting list" you write the information of the cutting list in tabular form into a file. In a dialog box, you can specify which fields you want to export. You can output characteristics from the category system, the recorded times and file names in various file formats (text file for further processing in Microsoft Excel, HTML file for viewing or printing in the Internet browser).
Proceed as follows: Right-click in the scene list of your video edit and then left-click "Export Edit List" in the context menu. The Edit Output Wizard starts. In step 1, select the columns of the table and their order. In step 2, the result table is displayed in a preview. You define the output file name and the output format in step 3. If you want to edit analysis data further in Microsoft Excel, select the file type ".csv" and the format "Text file, semicolon separated". In step 4, you can view the result or change to the output directory and exit the wizard.
With the editing assistant in utilius® vs you can research scenes from different analyses on the basis of characteristics and compile them in an editing list (for example, to get all actions of an athlete in a certain period or in a tournament).
This function is available in the feature packages standard and advanced.
To create a video edit using the Edit Wizard:
Select "New Video Editing" from the File - New menu. Click "Next" once and "Add" in the next window to select one or more category systems. Now add the category systems that were used in the analyses you want to research. Click "Next" and add the analyses. Click "Next". In the following window, select the characteristics to be searched for in video scenes. This works in a similar way to the analysis (Category - Characteristic). The selection conditions are listed in the table below the category system. All characteristics in a row are linked "logically-UND". This means that in an analysis scene both characteristics must be set for it to be selected (example: action=attack AND area=left outside). With the button "Add" you can make a second selection, which is then linked to the first selection "Logical OR" (Example: Action=Attack AND Range= right outer). Click "Next" and you will get a preview list with all analysis scenes that meet the selection conditions ((Action=Attack AND Range=left outer) OR (Action=Attack AND Range=right outer)). If the list is empty, there are no scenes with the selected conditions. If it is incomplete, the selection conditions may not be correct. In both cases you can use the "Back" button to correct your selection. If the preview list is in order, click on "Finish" and the scenes will be included in the video edit.
In the video editing window of utilius® vs , the video scenes are listed in the order in which they were captured and are output in the same way during video editing. Of course, you can move scenes with the mouse to a desired sequence or delete them completely. With large cut lists, however, this is quite time-consuming. This is easier with the function "Extended sorting...".
This function is only available in the feature packages standard and advanced.
How to sort your cutting list:
Right-click in the cut list and select "Advanced sorting..." from the context menu. All table columns of the cut list and the category system are displayed in the left half of the window. Select the columns or categories you want to sort by one after the other. A click on the arrow takes over the selection into the right window. Pay attention to the order, because this is decisive for the later sorting. For example, if you first select the category "Athlete" and then "Action", the sort order is "Athlete 1" (with all actions), then "Athlete 2" (with all actions) and so on. In the opposite case, first "Action" and then "Athlete", the sort order is "Action x" (with all athletes) and then "Action y" (with all athletes).
You can also remove individual sorting criteria from the right window and re-sort the cut list by clicking "OK". If you want to restore the original sort, first remove all categories from the right window and then select the "Scene ID" column as the sort criterion.
Note: The cutting list is always output in the order of the column "No.". No matter how you sort the cut list, duplicate or delete scenes, this has no effect on the analysis from which the scenes originate, as this is saved separately.
Open the Category System (Administration - Category System) window, select the appropriate category system, and click Layouts. In the left half of the window, select a characteristic with the mouse and drag it to a suitable position in the right half of the window while holding down the mouse button. Proceed in the same way with all characteristics that are to be contained in the graphical evaluation template. Now choose a background for the evaluation template (Choose Background button). Backgrounds are BMP or EMF graphics, for example playing fields, of which a selection has already been installed with utilius® vs Arrange the buttons sensibly and assign further properties to them. Click with the right mouse button on the corresponding
button (context menu Properties) and select a different label, a button graphic, the size, the background color and the font color. You can also select and edit several buttons simultaneously by holding down the Ctrl key. Finally, enter a name for the evaluation template and close the window with OK.
In the analysis window of utilius® vs you can now toggle between table form and graphical
evaluation template.
If you want to move the buttons again in the analysis window, select them first and move them to the desired position by holding down the Alt key.
Output
You first create a video edit from a list of analysis scenes. In the simplest case, select the button in the video view in der Videoansicht einer geöffneten Analyse.
Further options are described in the section Output to recorder of your online help.
Vorwärtsspulen When forward rewinding, utilius® vs stops the recorder when the end of the video is reached on tape. However, you have to rewind the tape to stop the recorder at the end of the tape recording.
No unplayed gaps should be left on the tape. With new (not yet recorded) DV tapes, the time code for the following recording begins again at 00:00:00,00 after unrecorded tape sections. Such recordings cannot be reliably processed with utilius® vs(e.g. for re-recordings), because the time code is then no longer unique.
When you find the tape position, set the recorder to Pause or Stop and start output. .
As a rule, longer cut lists cannot be output in one piece, since the high memory requirements often do not allow the cut list to be played back continuously for a long time.
For this reason, a cut list is output by default scene by scene. The recording is paused between the scenes, the next scene is prepared and the recording is continued after a lead time.
The output of a cutting list is relatively memory intensive. Close all other applications during output. This ensures that Windows does not have to gain free memory by swapping to disk during cut output. These disk accesses can hinder the rapid reloading of video data for continuous output. Furthermore, no hard disk activities (e.g. starting another application) should be triggered. If possible, do not work with the PC for the output time.
The video file or files are probably not in DV format. For example, the files were compressed to a different format when they were edited, or they were imported from a different video format. When outputting, the files must first be recompressed, which takes time and cannot be done at the required output speed on most PCs. Therefore, a cut file in DV format must first be created and then output to the recorder.
You first create a video edit from a list of analysis scenes. In the simplest case, select the button in the video view in der Videoansicht einer geöffneten Analyse. To specify the compression format, select an appropriate compression format in the Output Options dialog box before outputting.
Note: If you receive an error message when you start the output, you may not be able to use the selected compression format. In this case, select a different format.
Link your video scenes to statistical data from analyses and sections by simply selecting data from the category system to create your individual result tables and charts. You can export the evaluations into HTML format and pass them on to your athletes and trainer colleagues or publish them on the Internet. The basis are the characteristics of your video scenes recorded in the video analysis processing step.
utilius® vs Version 4.3.10 offers with its revised evaluation module a multitude of possibilities for the presentation of analysis results. A video analysis consists of several scenes, which are described in more detail with characteristics from the category system. In the evaluation module, these characteristics are displayed in lists, tables and graphics and linked to the corresponding video scenes. A mouse click on the corresponding table or graphic element and the video is displayed. You can freely define the type of display. Evaluation templates for scene lists, tables, diagrams, picture panels and presentation folders are available for this purpose. You can then present the evaluation in Internet Explorer and pass it on on CD or DVD.
