Basketball, one of the world's most popular sports, is played by a total of 450 million people around the world. The North American National Basketball Association (NBA) is probably the best-known basketball league.
In Germany, the German Basketball Federation (DBB) is the umbrella organization that organizes ball sports. According to the DBB, especially the younger target group counts basketball among the most popular sports. Among other things, the team sport can strengthen team spirit, dexterity and rhythm, which is why it is increasingly taught in kindergartens and schools.
The direct block - What is it?
In basketball, as in other team sports, there are numerous tactics that a player must master. A special tactic is the so-called block. In basketball, a distinction is made between a direct and an indirect block.
The execution of a block, one of the "most variable group tactical tools in basketball", is very complex. This is because to execute it, a player must combine both individual tactics and team tactics, as well as defense. There are always at least three players involved: The passer, the blocker and the block user.
- The passer must wait for the right time to pass the ball. The ball must be easy for the receiver - the block user - to catch and process.
- The blocker performs several movements in succession. It is important to have a good orientation in the room.
- The block user has the task of maintaining a large distance between him and the defender, as well as finally accepting the ball and executing the block.
As mentioned above, the execution of a direct block in basketball is very complex. This is because the block is characterized primarily by a variety of tactics. It is used in "position and quick attacks against man-man defenses (MMV) and also against ball-space defenses (BRV)". The block can be executed from different positions and from different directions.
An analysis of the direct block in basketball
Hubert Remmert and Mike Lyslen from the Faculty of Sports Science at the Ruhr University in Bochum took a close look at the tactics in a study.
In particular, they examined how often the tactic is used, how often it is successful, and how it affects victory or defeat. For the evaluation, the authors used our video analysis software utilius vs.
Remmert and Lyslen published their results in the German Journal of Exercise and Sport Research, "Analysis of interactions in the direct block as a preparatory and final offensive action in randomly selected main round games of the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga 2017/18."

What is it about?
The position attack is the most frequently executed move in basketball. It accounts for a total of 75-80 percent of all attacks. However, this type of attack - if we now consider the points scored - is below average success. The physical strain on the players executing it is another problem.
For these reasons, among others, the share of direct blocks in total offensive completions has increased by 40 percent. The direct block has a decisive advantage: if the team creates defensive aids together, basket-throwing opportunities can arise from the block. The decisive factor for victory or defeat is primarily how well a player executes the respective direct block.
In summary, the direct block is a possible alternative to the "classical" positional attack.
Analysis of the moves with utilius vs
A random sample from the 14 main round games of the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) 2017/18 was used for the study. Our utilius vs software assisted with a tactics analysis. In detail, this means that a total of 2555 attack sequences were first described and then evaluated. The data was then analyzed using the statistical program SPSS Statistics.
A category system was a suitable aid in the analysis of preparatory and final actions. In this the following observation characteristics were mapped:
- general, e.g. points scored, determination of winners or losers
- tactical like block or attack phase and
- spatial, i.e. place of completion
Advantages of video analytics software utilius vs
The video analysis software utilius vs was used in the study to assist in the analysis of the game data.
In this way, an analysis can already be carried out online during a game or training session. The video can be placed under the performed analysis afterwards. The slow motion function helps to analyze movements and tactics exactly. But the software can also provide useful information for the follow-up to a match - for example, to prepare for an opponent.
With the help of the evaluation module, relevant data can be visualized. Together with the corresponding video scene, tables and diagrams can be created from data. Already at half-time, the software can graphically display statistical data. These can be supplemented at any time.
So that important scenes are not "lost", the user can tag them and either mark them for archiving, for further processing or for presentation of the results. Here, the above category system can be created beforehand, so that during the evaluation can be immediately assigned by tag.
Results of the analysis
Results that emerged from the analysis were as follows:
For example, there was a trend toward increased use of the direct block. This trend is also reflected - independently of the study - in basketball in general.
In addition, the authors confirmed that the direct block is important for player success in basketball . The recommendation is therefore to anchor a training of the technique as well as tactics in the training also in the long term. Thus it is important to train also "surprise cases" and to develop the "individual decision-making ability of the players as broadly as possible".
